Ideas for Projects in Second Life.

1. Teaching Health and Safety with a dangerous science lab. - > Lamis

2. E whiteboard (needs MM and coding skills)

3. Graph Maker (needs a little MM and good coding)

4. Maureen Kendal has ideas about facial expressions and gestures in SL. SL has some functionality in this area but it is basic at the moment. 2 Simple Software had some interest in this.

5. A former member of staff, Geoff Butcher, has made a recruitment / student services area but it needs either filling with information and examples of student work or deleting and starting again. He also made a nightclub in need of some life.

6. I’ve had ideas about using Lego like blocks in SL to teach programming. (Needs good coding and education skills.)

7. Similar to the programming idea I think SL could be used to teach telecommunications. Objects can send messages to objects. (Needs reasonable coding and education skills and some telecommunications.)

8. Similar to the programming idea I think SL could be used to teach electronics – a simple example would be simple circuits with resistors in series or in parallel. (Needs reasonable coding and education skills and some electronics.)

9. I would like to see our college in Trinidad using SL and our staff in India so we can support them more closely, but this is only an idea in my head and might not be possible in the timescale of the module. Perhaps we could build an international office for oversees staff to communicate with London, plus give out information for international students and agents in India etc.    - > Probably Steph

10. If we spread the net wider we could involve other departments. An obvious one is teaching foreign languages in SL, building spaces and learning materials for this. See SLanguages conference. (Good MM some coding)

11. There is potential for doing some work on sound in SL.

12. Machinima and other resources teaching how to make Machinima or anything else by using Machinima.

13. Virtual Chair Museum - but timing might be a problem for this module. Could create a small demo/pilot/prototype. -> probably Mike

14. Hall of residence for Students - creation of an online community.

15. Using SL to teach systems architecture and design e.g. ATM and Banking IT back office demonstration/explanation. (Needs programming and knowledge of business IT.)

16. Money Doctors – we applied for a small grant to create an environment to teach students about managing their money, but didn’t get the grant. We imagined a student flat which would show the costs, e.g. rent, council tax (zero for students), electricity consumption, internet connection and phone etc. This would be interactive so the costs would change accordingly.

17. Computer Science Park.-> Possibly Cristian and Albert but lots of scope for more.
  • Simulate a von Neumann architecture processor.
  • CD/DVD reader/recorder
  • Programming components – Sequence, selection, repetition.
  • Data structures – variable types, arrays, lists, linked lists.
  • Image representation.

18. Ecological project with Virtually linked (Second Life London) Use their reproduction of London in SL to give information on environmental impacts and make this interactive so a visitor could e.g. double glaze Harrods and see the environmental impact.
- > Probably Abdala

OR an idea of your own. Discuss it with Alan before you start developing.
